Making Room

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! (And it's beginning to look like this is one of my longest posts ever!)

Things are about to get very busy wherever you are! I do not want to have a stressful Christmas or Advent season so I do as much as I can in advance. This is not to say that those of you who procrastinate (I have been there!) or those of you who can’t see the end of the day (let alone the end of the season) are wrong or that you can’t have a relaxing and meaningful Advent/Christmas season. You can! We just have to be intentional. I could easily get all my Christmas “stuff” done early but not have my heart ready for Christmas!

I didn’t grow up celebrating Advent- this is a relatively new phenomenon for me but I love it. I love it because if we let it do what it was meant to do, it will prepare us and make us more in tune to the manger and ultimately, the Cross. This is the beginning of our greatest season as Christians- I say the beginning because Easter is the climax of all celebrations for those who love and follow Jesus- but let’s not forget about the babe in the manger whose sole purpose in coming was to take us back Home with Him.
As we begin Advent this coming Sunday, I wanted to share a few things I do to slow down the season and make it more meaningful and more worshipful…

1. Prepare by observing Advent.
          *Maybe you have never participated in any Advent doings but, especially if you have children, this can be one of the highlights of the season! Our family has been reading this beautiful Advent book since our eldest child was born. It was created and illustrated by a local artist and we love it. You can purchase your own copy here

*Another idea to consider is a Jesse Tree. We are going to do it this year. I am excited for my children to participate and I will show pictures of our own Jesse Tree later. Ann Voskamp has a great resource that includes ornaments and daily devotionals for you to print off and download, if you subscribe as a reader.

*Others do an Advent calendar. I particularly like this one by Jessi Connolly. I didn’t choose to do the calendar this year because I figure we are already preparing through 2 different ways.

2.  Less is More.
*I know it goes against our very nature as loving moms (and parents) to not give our children everything they want. I want to challenge you to think about gift-giving in a more meaningful manner. Kids don’t need everything they want and our American culture has so convinced us that we will be inferior and our kids will be inferior if we don’t get in line (by now you may have missed your chance!) to buy that coveted item or latest electronic "i-gadget".

*Pare down the amount of gifts your child(ren) will receive. Make it a goal to give a few things that are meaningful instead of a higher quantity of gifts that will be forgotten in a few months. For example, my older daughter loves horses and loves to create. So, my husband (I am embarrassed to say that HE came up with this and not me!) suggested that we give her scrapbook materials. She will love this! So we purchased horse stickers, a spiral bound scrapbook, and are planning to print off pictures that we have of her on different horses and ponies. Gifts like this will go a long way down memory lane, too.

           3.  Put on the brakes.
* Say no to as many things as possible. I am not kidding. It’s OK to pass up that birthday party on behalf of your child. It’s OK not to send out Christmas cards this year.  It’s OK not to fly across the country when you have infants and small children. It’s OK not to go to the annual cookie exchange.

*Say yes to the meaningful times with your family and friends. Say yes to sitting by your lighted Christmas tree and wrapping your mind around the Savior of the world coming to light the Earth with His arrival.

So, friends, enjoy this Advent season. Don’t let it go by too fast before you have had time to ponder and slow down. And now, I would like to know… what do you and your family do to observe Advent?

Hostess Gift

I know I have shared with you Christmas gift ideas already (this could also be considered one) but I thought I would share my Thanksgiving hostess gift, too. You could also turn this idea to an anytime-kind-of-gift or even to keep for yourself!

All credit goes to Heather at http://www.settingforfour.com/2012/05/turn-childrens-art-into-tea-towels.html
for the inspiration. I saw her tutorial on Pinterest and went from there to create my own.

I had bought a set of colored tea-towels for our Thanksgiving hosts but knew I wanted to make them a little more special... Here is one of them, all finished and ready for Thanksgiving!

And here is the other one. Looking back, I should have made the font bigger but it is what it is. Next time...

Click on the link in the paragraph above to be taken to Heather's website for her easy tutorial! I used Microsoft Word to spell out what I wanted and added a graphic... Think of the possibilities you have with these materials!

DIYWingback Chair Re-Upholstered

I bought this chair for $4 at a yard sale over the summer and knew that it could be beautiful if given a new upholstery job. What do I know about upholstery? Nothing. So, I researched quite a bit and I was finally motivated to finish before December and the holidays came around.

I worked on it off and on over the fall... taking the staples off, debating on a fabric choice, researching more and more and finally came to the day when it was all ready to be recovered. Stephen helped me a ton and I couldn't have done it without his muscle. Seriously- who knew you had to have such muscles for upholstery?

We made a few mistakes (I did) in cutting the fabric and it isn't perfect but it is functional and we really like it. I was going to be crazy and sew my own piping for the edges but after seeing the cost of the custom footer I would have to buy, I said "forget it" and got some $3 decorative trim from the Hobster (Hobby Lobby) and hot-glued that right on. Much easier and what was I thinking?

Brown Paper Packages

Today I have two quick Christmas ideas for you- one that involves Brown Paper Bag wrapping and the other is an idea for a gift for the newlyweds in your family (I have two newlywed sisters).
So, yesterday my daughter finished her canvas painting for Nana. I decided to use what materials I had on hand to wrap them so I can have them ready for mailing, come December!  I told you I was getting ready early!

Here is what you'll need for the easiest and cheapest wrapping project ever:
* Brown paper bag
* Christmas stamp & ink
* Ribbon

 Just stamp and tie that pretty ribbon on and you are done!

I think they turned out pretty cute for zero dollar wrapping and for a very low-budget but very meaningful gift!

Ready for mailing!

And now for the newlywed gift... We aren't huge gift givers in my family- mainly because of the distance but I always like to send something small that is meaningful too. My sisters were both married this summer and I remember, as a newlywed, not having any ornaments for our first Christmas together! We were poor and just didn't have anything! So I usually give this to my siblings and in-laws for their first Christmas together as a married couple because I know I appreciated any ornaments that were given.

Supplies needed:
* Frame ornaments
*Scrapbook paper
*Clear-backed stickers

Go to The Hobs (our ridiculous nickname for Hobby Lobby) and pick up these extra cute frame ornaments with your 40% off coupon. (If you don't live near a Hobby Lobby, I am sure you can find a similar thing at Michael's!)

Cut out a shape to fit the ornament and then put whatever sort of message you want on the paper. I did "Mr. & Mrs." as a nod to their new status, and "Our 1st Noel" because the word Christmas is too long! You could also just do the year (2012) or a simple Christmas word like, Joy or Peace... the possibilities are limitless and up to you and your creativity.

How about you- any good ideas for newlyweds or for zero dollar wrapping?

Easy & Affordable Christmas Gifts

I know it seems crazy but I am already thinking ahead to Christmas! There are only 6 1/2 weeks left and I want to get as much done as early as I can. You know the grandparents just want a little token from the grandkids- something meaningful from them. My kids love to do art, which makes it easy to turn it into gifts!

 Michael's had a great coupon in this week's paper which gave me 50% off anything- I used it to buy a 5 pack of canvas (6x8 size) which were $5.99 regular price. This means I got 5 gifts worth for $3 (with my coupon!).

We used my bountiful supply of acrylic craft paints and I had Louisa go to town with painting. She did a great job- it's hard for a 4 year old to really paint a picture!

 This is some of our finished product- I get to keep the blue house picture but the other two are for grandparents. My older daughter will be doing this after school today so then we will have 4 gifts done (since I am keeping the 5th canvas). Now I feel like we have accomplished something today!

Trick or Treat!

We made it through Halloween! The girls had picked the easiest costumes ever. Louisa wanted to be a cowgirl (just like Kailyn was last year) so we had everything for that.

Kailyn wanted to be a monkey and she is pretty happy with a simple costume- she uses her imagination more than anything. We already had the brown shirt, I picked up some brown pants for $3 at the thrift store. Then we transformed one of her headbands into monkey ears by covering it with brown ribbon and construction- paper monkey ears.
How easy was that?

And just for fun... here are some other pictures from last weekend on a walk in the woods:
